April is Stress Awareness Month, a timely reminder to pause and reflect on how stress impacts our daily lives. While stress is inevitably a part of life, we know those working in the construction industry often feel the pressure more than most, whether due to tight deadlines, long hours or the daily pressure of project work.

Pressures can be heightened further by a traditional ‘stiff upper lip’ culture, where those experiencing mental health challenges may feel unable to open up, ask for help or speak openly about their struggles.
As a result, mental health and wellbeing remain some of the biggest issues facing our industry, impacting productivity, safety and teamwork.
Fresh air. Fresh perspective.
When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to assume that meaningful change requires a big intervention. But small, manageable actions can have a powerful effect – and one of the simplest is taking a walk.
Even a short walk of just 10 minutes has been shown to support mental wellbeing in several ways, including helping to:
- reduce stress levels
- improve mood and focus
- support better sleep
- clear the mind
Stepping away from your desk or screen, getting some fresh air and moving your body can help reset your thoughts and provide valuable headspace. So why not see if you can build a walk into your day?
Support is always available
While small changes like walking can make a difference, we know that stress isn’t always something that can be eased with a quick reset. For some, it may feel heavier, and that’s okay.
If stress feels bigger than something you can manage alone, support is always there. Our Mental Health First Aiders, Aileen Partner, Chris Blencowe, Darren Knott, Fergus Adams, Joe Murray, Josh Kohler, Kay Patel, Nia Forester, Paddy Keeble, Ricky Hedges, Riley Morse and Terry Tracey are here to listen and support whenever it’s needed.
There are also organisations dedicated to helping those in construction and beyond, offering confidential advice and resources. These include:
- Mates in Mind – supporting mental health across the construction sector
- Construction Helpline – providing confidential support for construction workers and their families
- Mind – offering information, guidance and mental health support services
Looking ahead
This May, we’ll be building on those small steps with our Stepathon challenge. More details will be shared soon, including how Team Parkeray will be getting involved and adding a spring to their step.
